Academic Evaluation

Grading System - NWAC American High School Program

NWAC follows an international, GPA-based grading system where student performance is reported through numerical scores, letter grades and GPA. This ensures transparent, globally understandable academic records for students.

External Subjects

Theory / practical papers in external subjects are assessed in numerical scores. Mark sheets display both scores and their corresponding grades.

Internal Assessment

For internal assessment subjects, only grades are shown. Schools submit internal scores to the NWAC Regional Agency, which then awards the final grades.

Conversion System

A standard conversion chart maps percentage ↔ grade ↔ GPA (4.0 scale) to ensure consistency across schools and transcripts.

Credit Hours & Workload

1 Credit = 180 hours of academic course work.

  • Includes classroom teaching, assignments, projects and exams.
  • Credit-based planning ensures that students complete the required academic load for graduation.
  • Credits combined with GPA give a clear picture of overall academic progress.

How Grading is Applied

  • For external examinations, students receive scores out of the maximum marks. These scores are converted into grades using the official chart.
  • For internal assessments (including practicals), schools submit raw scores to the NWAC Regional Agency, which then awards the final grades.
  • Final mark sheets show a combination of grades, scores (where applicable) and GPA to support national and international recognition.

Why a GPA-Based Grading System?

The NWAC grading framework aligns with global high school standards, making it easier for universities, colleges and evaluation agencies worldwide to understand a student's academic performance.

  • Reduces subjectivity in evaluation.
  • Provides a clear snapshot of academic strength.
  • Supports fair comparison between students across different schools and regions.
  • Helps students plan targets - for example, maintaining a minimum GPA required by certain institutions.

Important Notes

  • Only grades awarded through the official NWAC process should be treated as authentic.
  • Any reinterpretation or modification of grades/GPA by third parties is not permitted.
  • For clarification on grading or GPA conversion, institutions should contact the NWAC/SERI Regional Office.

This grading system is applicable to the NWAC American High School Program delivered through SERI-affiliated institutions.
